For years, when we had unwanted or usused medication, we were told to either flush it down the toilet or throw it out in the trash. After many years of this practice, we now have prescription medications in our drinking water and our environment. Several studies have found traces of prescription medications in most major metropolitan areas including Northern New Jersey and Philadelphia. Several other studies have found mutations and strange behavior of marine life after exposure to certain prescription medications. Safe medication disposal is something we all need to take seriously.
Here is how our program works:
1. It is completely FREE.
2. It doesn't matter where the medication was originally filled.
3. Black out any pertinent patient information. (ie: patient name, patient address, phone number, etc.)
4. Put the medication bottles in a plastic bag and drop off at Jersey Shore Pharmacy, 3007 Ocean Heights Ave, Egg Harbor Township, NJ 08234.
5. We are unable to accept controlled substances. Current federal laws prevent us from accepting controlled substances of any kind. Please check with us if you are unsure what medications are controlled substances.
6. We cannot accept any sharps. (ie: needles, lancets, kits with needles). Sharps can be disposed of in the Emergency Department of both AtlantiCare Hospitals.
7. We will send all returned medications to National Pharmaceutical Returns (N.P.R.) for environmentally friendly disposal.
8. Please contact us with any further questions regarding this program.
